Cuero Independent School District
Acceptable Use Technology Agreement for STUDENTS

The Cuero Independent School District is pleased to offer students access to a computer network and to the Internet. Access to the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, museums, and other repositories of information. Parents should be aware that some material accessible via the Internet might contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate, offensive or inappropriate. While the purposes of the school are to use Internet resources for constructive educational goals, students may find ways to access other materials. We believe that the benefits to students from access to the Internet exceed the disadvantages. The District has a filter in place to prevent access to most inappropriate sites, but the Internet is an evolving entity.

RULES OF APPROPRIATE USE:

Students are responsible for appropriate behavior on the school’s computer network just as they are in the classroom. It is expected that students will comply with district standards and the specific rules set forth below. The use of the network is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked if abused. The student is personally responsible for his/her actions when utilizing the school’s computer resources. Despite our best efforts and beyond the limits of filtering technology, your child may run across areas of adult content and some material you might find objectionable.

PRIVACY – Network storage areas are the property of the school district. The Network Administrator may review any storage area of the school network to maintain system integrity and to insure that students are using the system responsibly.

COPYING/DOWNLOADING - Students are NOT permitted to download or install any software, shareware, or freeware onto the school’s computers. Students are NOT permitted to copy others’ work or intrude into others’ files.

INAPPROPRIATE MATERIALS OR LANGUAGE – Students are NOT permitted to transmit, retrieve or store materials that are discriminatory, harassing, obscene, pornographic, or inappropriate. Should students encounter such material by accident, they should report it to their teacher immediately. The use of district online systems for personal gain, political lobbying or any other purpose which is illegal or against district policy or contrary to the district’s best interest is NOT permitted.

GUIDELINES:
Do not damage the computer or the network in any way.

Do not interfere with the operation of the network or computer systems, by installing software.

Do not violate copyright laws.

Do not view, send or display inappropriate messages or pictures.

Do not waste computer resources. This includes downloading music, printing excessive quantities, playing online games, tampering with computer parts, erasing programs, destroying data, introducing viruses, attempting to gain unauthorized access or modifying network settings without permission.

Do not trespass in others’ folders or files.

BE PREPARED to be held accountable for your actions and for the loss of privileges if the Rules of Appropriate Use are violated.

As a parent or guardian of ________________________________, I have read the Network and Internet Use Policy [CA (LOCAL)] and the Acceptable Use Technology Agreement for Students and understand the conditions for use of the network and Internet resources provided by the Cuero ISD for the purpose of promoting educational excellence and supporting instructional goals.

By my signature below, I consent to my child having access to the Internet through the Cuero ISD network and release the school district from any responsibility for information my child may obtain in the course of using the Internet.

Further I agree that any use of the network and Internet under my child’s user ID or account must be consistent with that policy. I understand that district employees have the authority to monitor network usage, including electronic messages sent and received to ensure compliance with the policy, and by this Agreement consent to that access.

I understand that my child is responsible for any transactions that occur under his or her user ID or account, that any violation of that policy will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, and that my child may be denied access to the district’s electronic resources in addition to any other disciplinary action.

I understand that from time to time the school may wish to publish examples of student projects or photographs of students on the School District’s website. Only first names will be used when identifying a student in a photograph.
