STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Jeri Ficklen, a CHS freshman on the Lady Gobbler Varsity Volleyball team, has been a huge impact player for the Lady Gobblers this season. Jeri plays middle blocker and has developed into a huge threat at the net- both offensively and defensively. Jeri really shined in the game against Poteet, where she amassed 10 blocks, and took that momentum into the game vs. Pleasanton, where she added 7 blocks for her team. She is not only a phenomenal volleyball player, but she also maintains all A’s, is in the top of her class, has the best attitude, and a work ethic that is unmatched. Jeri brings energy and enthusiasm to the court, and has done a fantastic job of stepping into such a huge role. We are so excited to watch Jeri continue to grow and dominate on the court! Congratulations, Jeri!

STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Ainsley Reeve, a CHS junior, has been a huge factor for the 2018 Cuero Lady Gobbler Softball team.  Although she has battled injury Ainsley continues to prove that she is a force in the heart of a highly competitive Lady Gobbler lineup. She hit a pivotal homerun in a big district home game against Somerset in which she also had a career high of 5 RBIS. She continued the next week again with another big homerun in a crucial game against Pleasanton. Defensively, her ability to adjust to a new position as a first basemen has proven impactful for the Lady Gobbler defense. Her ability to receive thrown balls has helped the program out of a jam on more than one occasion.  Ainsley continues to learn and instill knowledge among young players and athletes in the program, which has allowed others to succeed as well. In the classroom, Ainsley takes her role as a student athlete seriously and does what it takes to maintain her grades. This aspect makes her extremely valuable to the overall Lady Gobbler Athletic Program. Congratulations Ainsley!

AINSLEY R.

STUDENT ATHLETE OF WEEK:

Clayre Pullin, a CHS freshmen, competed at the district golf tournament where she shot her season best 98 on both days. This spring, Clayre has juggled her golf and track schedules while competing in both sporting events and staying on top of her school work. Great job, Clayre!

Flu Info

We are starting the new year with a bang! Flu numbers have peaked during our time off for Christmas break. Learn ways to protect yourself and your family from the flu virus.

Five simple steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting — or spreading — the flu:

1.Get vaccinated. It is not too late to get a flu shot.

2.Wash hands frequently.

3.Cover coughs and sneezes.

4.Stay home if you’re sick. Each child needs to be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine.

5.Convince those around you to follow steps 1 - 4.

Watch our web page for flu info and resources.

Spinal Screenings

In accordance with Texas Law, Cuero ISD Health services will be performing mandatory Spinal screenings for all 5th and 8th graders. This screening is done to detect abnormal curvature of the spine that can appear during the years of rapid growth. It is most important to detect the abnormality early so treatment can be provided. Without treatment, undetected scoliosis can worsen rapidly during the growth years and result in physical deformity, limitation of physical activity and other more serious complications.

Dates of screening:

Hunt 5th grade: Thurs., March 8th

CJHS 8th grade: Tues. and Wed., March 6th and 7th

Girls will be screened in their sports bra and boys will be screened with no shirt to assess the spine.  If a child shows any signs of a possible deformity, parents will be notified in a written packet from their campus nurse.  For any questions please notify your campus nurse or 275-1900 ext.117. Working together we can have healthy students.

STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Claevon Patton,  a CHS senior, will be running the 400 meter dash on Saturday, May 12th in Austin, at the state track meet. For the past 2 years Claevon has been one of the main cogs on the Gobbler track team. He ran on the 4x100 team that finished 5th at the state track meet last year. This year his leadership has been an inspiration to the Gobbler track team. He has run on all three relays this year along with running the 400 meter dash. His best time this year is 49.20 and this will put him in the running to get a medal Saturday. After graduating at the end of May, Claevon plans on attending Southwest Texas State in San Marcos and playing football. Thank you Claevon for all that you have done for the Gobbler athletic program the past 4 years!

Student Athlete of the Week

STUDENT ATHLETE OF WEEK:

John Rodriguez is a senior member of the Gobbler football team, and has been a starter on offense and defense for the last two years.  John leads a defense in tackles that only gave up 24 total points in district play.  He also plays an important role at fullback on offense in helping pave the way for the running backs to rush for an average of 269 yards per game.  More importantly, John serves as one of our captains, and has provided excellent leadership to our team both on and off the field.  Congratulations to John Rodriguez!

FOOTBALL SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR THURS. 9/27:

Due to factors out of our control, we are having to make some changes to our schedule for all of our sub-varsity teams this Thursday. For high school, Wharton does not have a JV team, so we will combine with our freshmen to play one game at 5:30 here in Cuero. Also, we are having to split where the jr high teams will play. Yoakum only has one 7th grade team, so we will combine our 7th grade teams to play one game here at Gobbler stadium beginning at 4:00. Our freshmen will follow immediately after. Our 8th grade will travel to Yoakum to play the White team game at 4:00, and the green team will play immediately after. They have high school games scheduled to be played after our 8th grade is finished. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause, but it was the best way to give all of our teams an opportunity to play this Thursday.

STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Tre’lin Harper is a CHS varsity sophomore whose big play has helped the Gobblers Basketball get off to a 2-1 start this season. As a 6 foot 6 post, Tre’lin has averaged a double-double in his first 3 games putting an average of 12 points and 10 rebounds per game. He is a big presence that draws lots of attention down low on both ends of the floor.  Tre’lin is an extremely coachable young man who possesses a strong desire to better his game. He works hard on the floor and in the classroom to become a better student athlete each day. He values the little things that lead to big success and has been an influential part of the changes to Cuero Basketball. As a young player, the future looks bright for him and this program.  Keep up the good work Tre’lin!

Schedule Pick-Up Class Schedules
STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Senior Trey Moore had a game for the ages for the Cuero Gobblers against the 2-0 El Campo Ricebirds. The senior defensive tackle, defensive end, and tight end recorded a stat line that would make any player envious. He tallied 10 Tackles, 3 of which were for losses, deflected 2 passes at the line of scrimmage, recorded 3 pancakes on offense, and sealed the game with a Pick 6 in the 4th quarter to push the score to 34-20 in favor of the Gobblers. It was a huge win for the Gobblers, and Moore’s performance in particular was key to the victory. However, perhaps more important than any stat line, or big play, was the circumstances overcome by Trey on that Friday night. Trey truly honored his mother’s memory (Dede King) with his performance. Way to go, Trey!

Credit By Exam Information

STUDENTS GET CHANCES DURING SUMMER TO “TEST OUT OF CLASSES”

The state’s education law, the Texas Administrative Code (TAC), will allow students to obtain credit in a course or grade level by passing tests approved by school district trustees.  Texas law, 19 TAC Chapter 74, allows students to "test out of a course" by taking a “Credit by Examination" without prior instruction in the course(s) being tested.  To earn credit for a grade or a subject the student must answer 80% of the questions correctly.  In accordance with local school district policy, a student in any of Grades 6-12 may be given credit for an academic subject in which he or she had some prior instruction, if the student scores 70% on the test.  The tests are rigorous, targeting all the objectives for the courses covered.

The tests will be administered in Victoria through Region III Education Service Center on June 20, 21, and 22, 2018 and again on July 11, 12, and 13, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on each date.  Registration applications may be picked up in Cuero ISD school district and campus counselor offices in May and are due completed to the campus counselor office by May 21, 2018.  There are no fees or costs to take the tests.

For more information call your campus counselor or Dr. Pam Longbotham at (361) 275-1922.

STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Sophomore, Clayre Pullin and Senior, Ainsley Reeve both stepped into major roles this week after an unexpected injury put the Lady Gobbler Volleyball team in a different line up than they’d been in. Clayre had to step in and play middle blocker- where she dominated, sealing the net with 7 blocks! Ainsley had to step up and play backrow- where she added 6 digs to the team’s defense. Clayre and Ainsley led the team offensively with Ainsley connecting for 10 kills and Clayre adding 7 kills of her own. Both girls are a pivotal part of Lady Gobbler Volleyball and we are so proud of their ability to tackle new roles without hesitation for the benefit of the team. Ainsley and Clayre are leaders both on and off of the court and we are so proud of them! Congratulations!

IMPORTANT INFO. FOR FOOTBALL GAME, 10/25/18:

If you are planning on going to the varsity football game in Austin tomorrow night, we wanted to make sure you are aware of a couple important things regarding the game. First, Austin ISD does not allow fans to bring in any bags or purses that are not clear bags, so please plan accordingly. Also, we have been informed that the water in Austin is not drinkable at this time due to the flooding that has taken place in recent days. We are sure they will have bottled water in the concession stands, but be sure not to drink any water from water fountains or faucets while anywhere in Austin. We are playing at Nelson Field tomorrow night at 7:30 pm. For those of you going, be safe on the road and we will see you at the game!

STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Senior, Deondrae Lang, has been a vital part of the Gobbler football team in several different areas. This season he has started at wide receiver and defensive back, and has also been a kick returner on special teams. In the Gobblers’ 70-0 win vs Eastside Memorial, Deondrae scored touchdowns three different ways. On defense, he scored on an interception return for a touchdown. He also returned a punt for a touchdown, and caught a pass for a touchdown. For his efforts, Deondrae is this week’s athlete of the week. Congratulations, Deondrae!
