Cuero ISD Board of Trustees Names Finalist for Superintendent

The Cuero Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees, at its 2/23/2017 meeting, named Dr. Micah Dyer, of Lovelady ISD, as finalist for superintendent. By law, the Board must now wait 21 days before voting to hire Dyer.   Dyer is slated to replace Interim Superintendent Dr. Ben Colwell.

The Board has followed a lengthy process in determining the finalist. In November, the Board hired Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services to direct the search. TASB consultants surveyed staff and community groups to determine desired characteristics of the new superintendent. The profile developed from the surveys was the yardstick used by the Board and consultants in evaluating the applicants for the position.

The Board selected six applicants for initial interviews. Three applicants were invited back for a second interview. The Board is scheduled to vote to offer a contract to Dyer at its regular monthly board meeting later in March.

Dyer has served as superintendent in Lovelady ISD since 2010; he oversees the business operations of the 550-student district.

Credit By Examination

Credit by Exam (CBE) Registration Procedures, Deadlines & Testing Dates

The state’s education law, the Texas Administrative Code (TAC), will allow public school students to obtain credit in a course or grade level by passing tests approved by school district trustees.  Texas law, 19 TAC Chapter 74, allows students to "test out of a course" by taking a “Credit by Examination" without prior instruction in the course(s) being tested.  To earn credit for a grade or a subject the student must answer 80% of the questions correctly.  In accordance with local school district policy, a student in any of Grades 6-12 may be given credit for an academic subject in which he or she had some prior instruction, if the student scores 70% on the test.  The tests are rigorous, targeting all the objectives for the courses covered.

The tests will be administered in Victoria through Region III Education Service Center on June 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, 2016 and again on July 13th, 14th, and 15th, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on each date.  Registration applications may be picked up in Cuero ISD school district and campus offices in May and are due completed to the campus counselor office by May 20, 2015. There are no fees or costs to take the tests.

For more information call your campus counselor or Pam Longbotham, Ed.D. at (361) 275-1922.

Credit by Exam packets must be signed by a parent or guardian and turned in to your campus counselor’s office by May 20.

Message from the Cuero ISD Health Services

Parents please help us ensure your child’s health and safety by keeping our nursing staff informed of any health changes including medication changes. Examples include broken extremities with cast or splint; any diagnostic testing including cardiac monitor; any newly diagnosed health conditions; any new medications or medication changes. Please notify your child’s campus nurse or district nurse for any changes in your child’s health. Thank you for your help to ensure your child receives the best care possible. Healthy students make better learners; by working together we can accomplish this goal!

Spinal Screenings

In accordance with Texas Law, Cuero ISD Health services will be performing mandatory Spinal screenings for all 5th and 8th graders. This screening is done to detect abnormal curvature of the spine that can appear during the years of rapid growth.  It is most important to detect  the abnormality early so treatment can be provided. Without treatment, undetected scoliosis can worsen rapidly during the growth years and result in physical deformity, limitation of physical activity and other more serious complications.

Dates of screening:

CIS 5th grade: February 20th -21st

CJHS 8th grade: February 15th-17th

Girls will be screened in their sports bra and boys will be screened with no shirt to assess the spine.

If a child shows any signs of a possible deformity, parents will be notified  in a written packet from their campus nurse.

For any questions please notify your campus nurse or 275-1900 ext.117. Working together we can have healthy students.
