Flu Info

We are starting the new year with a bang! Flu numbers have peaked during our time off for Christmas break. Learn ways to protect yourself and your family from the flu virus.

Five simple steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting — or spreading — the flu:

1.Get vaccinated. It is not too late to get a flu shot.

2.Wash hands frequently.

3.Cover coughs and sneezes.

4.Stay home if you’re sick. Each child needs to be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicine.

5.Convince those around you to follow steps 1 - 4.

Watch our web page for flu info and resources.
Cuero ISD Health Services:

Homecoming Week at Hunt and JCF

Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week

Jordan Whittington has been nominated for the Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week award, presented by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football and Wells Fargo in conjunction with the Texas Bowl.

Jordan is one of the ten nominees for the weekly statewide award, which is 100% decided by fan voting. The poll, located at www.texasfootball.com closes Friday at noon. The recipe for success, we’ve found, is schools that utilize social media to spread the word to their students, faculty, staff, coaches, spirit organizations, parents and anyone that supports their team and community.

Additionally, we have set up a Facebook page and Twitter feed:

Cuero ISD Board of Trustees Names Finalist for Superintendent

The Cuero Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees, at its 2/23/2017 meeting, named Dr. Micah Dyer, of Lovelady ISD, as finalist for superintendent. By law, the Board must now wait 21 days before voting to hire Dyer.   Dyer is slated to replace Interim Superintendent Dr. Ben Colwell.

The Board has followed a lengthy process in determining the finalist. In November, the Board hired Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services to direct the search. TASB consultants surveyed staff and community groups to determine desired characteristics of the new superintendent. The profile developed from the surveys was the yardstick used by the Board and consultants in evaluating the applicants for the position.

The Board selected six applicants for initial interviews. Three applicants were invited back for a second interview. The Board is scheduled to vote to offer a contract to Dyer at its regular monthly board meeting later in March.

Dyer has served as superintendent in Lovelady ISD since 2010; he oversees the business operations of the 550-student district.

Caeveon Patton,  a CHS senior, has been a huge contributor to the success of the Cuero Gobbler Track Team which just won the District Title.  He won the District Championship in both the Discus and Shotput last week.  He has personal best throws of 155’9 in the discus and 50’5 in the shotput.  He is currently ranked in the top 3 in the region in both, will be competing in the Area meet on April 19th in Poteet, and is looking to qualify for the Regional Track Meet.  Caeveon is a hard working young man, that does right and represents himself and his school very well. We are so proud of all “The Big Fellas” accomplishments and look forward to more! We know he has a bright future ahead of him. Congratulations, Caeveon!

Leah Whittington, a CHS Senior, has been a part of the Lady Gobbler track program for the past 4 years. She specializes in throwing shot put and discus and this year, has really excelled! She set personal records in both of her events, throwing 33’6” in shot put at the Edna track meet, and throwing a 103’6" in discus this past weekend in Goliad, finally breaking the 100’ mark! Leah comes to practice every day and pushes herself to be better, while bringing the biggest smile and the best attitude with her. We have some massive goals for Leah and we can’t wait to watch her demolish them! Congratulations, Leah! KEEP IT UP!

Leah W.

Maegan Pakebusch, a CHS senior, has proven to be a key player for the 2017 Lady Gobbler softball program. She has been a dangerous force in the heart of the Lady Gobbler lineup, as well as at third base and in the circle. Maegan continues to improve and grow as a softball player, which says a lot about her desire for the game. She is coachable in every aspect and strives to make her teammates as good as they can be.  In the classroom, Maegan continues to place academics at the top of her priorities and realizes the impact of getting a good education.  Overall, Maegan continues to embody what we expect in the Cuero Athletic program. Outstanding job Maegan!

Cuero ISD Health Services: Flu Season is Here!

Flu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. YOU  have the power to protect yourself and your family this season with these three actions to fight flu.

  • Get a flu vaccine. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. A yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against the flu. As long flu viruses are circulating, it is not too late to get vaccinated!
  • Take everyday actions to stop the spread of germs. Wash your hands often with soap and water, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands often with soap and water. If you become sick, limit your contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. If you get the flu, medicine, called antiviral drugs, can be used to treat flu illness. Antiviral drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also prevent serious flu complications.

Today at CJHS:
Parents of Cuero Junior High School Students:
This morning, a junior high school student found that he had not removed a plastic toy gun with an orange tip and trigger from his backpack that he was using off-campus the previous evening. Upon doing so, another student took it out and pretended to play with it in an area where other students were present. The toy has no mechanism in it allowing it to shoot anything, but it does make a clicking sound. The teacher immediately confiscated it, and the appropriate disciplinary action was taken by campus administration. At no time was anyone in danger. Parents, please remember, any toy gun is a prohibited item at school. The safety and security of your child is our number one priority. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Fleener, CJHS principal, at 275-1900 X 3.

Social Media Challenges for Parents Today

• Get involved and talk with your children about their day and social media
• Pay attention to any changes in your child’s behavior
• Urge your child to report any misbehavior they encounter online and on social media
• Teach your child to keep private things private, especially on the internet
• Remember that “loving” your child means taking actions that may make your child not “like” you at times
• It’s okay to take your child’s phone, search through it and make sure they are interacting with people you know (and in a way that’s healthy)

The Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why” and other challenges and programs have raised concerns over the content and implications for the safety of our children. As a school district we are concerned about the safety and well-being of all our children. We encourage parents to be vigilant about your child’s social media usage. Those who have ordered letter jackets through the Athletics Dept. can pick them up at the Field House office during normal business hours.

Spinal Screenings

In accordance with Texas Law, Cuero ISD Health services will be performing mandatory Spinal screenings for all 5th and 8th graders. This screening is done to detect abnormal curvature of the spine that can appear during the years of rapid growth.  It is most important to detect  the abnormality early so treatment can be provided. Without treatment, undetected scoliosis can worsen rapidly during the growth years and result in physical deformity, limitation of physical activity and other more serious complications.

Dates of screening:

CIS 5th grade: February 20th -21st

CJHS 8th grade: February 15th-17th

Girls will be screened in their sports bra and boys will be screened with no shirt to assess the spine.

If a child shows any signs of a possible deformity, parents will be notified  in a written packet from their campus nurse.

For any questions please notify your campus nurse or 275-1900 ext.117. Working together we can have healthy students.
